Propagation for Fun - Growing Ananas

Growing your own ananas is easy as one, two, three. Quite literally too. Check out the post for the three simple steps to starting an ananas, or pineapple, plant and a couple of photos as well.

Here are the three simple steps to propagating an ananas:
1. have an ananas
2. keep crown of ananas
3. plant ananas crown in some potting mixture
And that's about it really. Read on after the photos for some additional remarks.

Ananas (botanical name: Ananas comosus), or pineapple, is a tropical plant that can be easily propagated following the steps described above.
It is recommendable to allow the cut-off crown base(s) to dry out before potting to prevent rotting.
Its root system, when developed, is shallow. Therefore it is best to pot the ananas crown(s) in free-draining soil. I used my versatile 1 part coco peat, 1 part perlite, 1 part sand soil mixture (check out this post for more details on the basics of mixing potting soil).
Ananas are most commonly susceptible to mealybugs. Read this post for details on how to control this pest.
A healthy ananas will grow to a plant about half a meter in diameter and will have handsome long-speared leaves. It prefers moderate warmth, moisture, and watering; if the conditions are to its likening, it may even flower and produce fruit after a couple of years.
